Overview

A vitamin is an organic compound required as a nutrient in tiny amounts by an organism. A compound is called a vitamin when it cannot be synthesized in sufficient quantities by an organism, and must be obtained from the diet. Thus, the term is conditional both on the circumstances and the particular organism. For example, ascorbic acid functions as vitamin C for some animals but not others, and vitamins D and K are required in the human diet only in certain circumstances.

Vitamins are classified by their biological and chemical activity, not their structure. Thus, each "vitamin" actually refers to a number of vitamer compounds, which form a set of distinct chemical compounds that show the biological activity of a particular vitamin. Such a set of chemicals are grouped under an alphabetized vitamin "generic descriptor" title, such as "vitamin A," which (for example) includes retinal, retinol, and many carotenoids. Vitamers are often inter-convertible in the body. The term vitamin does not include other essential nutrients such as dietary minerals, essential fatty acids, or essential amino acids, nor does it encompass the large number of other nutrients that promote health but are otherwise required less often.

Fitness Magazines - Top Reasons To Read Them

Why do we need fitness magazines? Surely everything we need to know is that in books or can we learn from a trainer or nutritionist.

Surely no magazine is a substitute for expert guidance from a professional or serious study of books written by experts, magazines, but still its place.

The beauty of a magazine is that it is up to the minute, colorful and full of relatively short, easy to digest articles. A magazine can convey a wealth of information. There may be more summarize, weighty books and articles and come with the latest thinking for a broader public.

fitness is a fast-moving field. New research results will be displayed and constantly changing our thinking about exercise and nutrition. Ideas developed in professional sports and fitness training eventually filter down to the amateur level. Magazines make this process.

New equipment, training regime and food are often the first, in a magazine article or ad. A serious fitness enthusiasts May want to deal with the issues more, but a deeply magazine can be the first spark of interest.

magazines also have the advantage that they are encouraging. If we stuck with our fitness program and seem to go nowhere can it gratifying to read about someone else experiences. When we hear that other people have hit a plateau in their attempt to lose weight, but eventually overcome their problem, which we believe we can do the same too.

fitness magazines have an inspiring and a statement of intent role. That is what their glossy photos are all about. When we see a picture of a perfectly formed set of abdominal muscles, we can see what is possible. It is rather how to get a picture of a beautiful kitchen or bathroom. We know that our home is never like to see, but it gives us something to aim at.

Seeing too much perfection can be a little depressing. But a good fitness magazine will always be the inspiring equilibrium and a declaration of intent, with some on the floor of the information. A magazine is a fun way to essential information about the beginners. A book could be daunting for someone who is beginning a fitness program.

The advent of the Internet has even more prominence to magazines. An Internet magazine can be far more interactive than a printed publication. Magazines have always been problem and query pages, but the Internet allows readers, e-mail in their opinions and share them with other readers. Forums on Internet fitness magazines are often the most popular part of the magazine.

All the same features available in a printed journal can appear on an Internet magazine. There are articles on exercise and nutrition, personal experiences and reviews of new equipment and books. But there is the potential for so much more.

An Internet magazine offers an interactive personal trainer service that allows subscribers to input their fitness statistics and create a personal profile. You will receive a customized fitness program in their degree of fitness and personal goals. During the week they can progress.

Like so much of our lives the virtual world is becoming increasingly important in the personal fitness market magazine. This was not completely removed, the potential for printed magazines, which remains popular. The Internet is all well and good, but you can not prop your computer on the treadmill or bicycle ergometer. There is still a demand for the printed Fitness magazine.

Knee Injuries - How to Avoid This Common Sports Injury

knee injuries are the most common sports injuries seen in Britain today.

In Running alone, 60% of all runners are injured in an average year and about one third of these sports injuries to the knee.

knee injuries are the most common sports injuries sustained by school children, because they often occur during the soccer, hockey and rugby.

But far too little is known by the general public about the benefits of knee-support or other simple steps that can be taken to help prevent knee injuries.

The knee is the largest joint in the body, made up of bones, cartilage, muscles, tendons and ligaments. A knee injury sports can be one of these.

It may be difficult to understand, knee injuries and some of the complicated terms that do not make it any easier for the Laity.

You may have heard the knee "overuse" for example. Well, although it is sometimes an "excessive" injury, the real name of the condition is iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS). This is one of the most common knee injuries. It is actually caused by a lack of strength and flexibility more than anything else than can accurately be described as over-exploitation. In fact, it may be, has runners even though they are only approximately 5 miles, which can hardly be seen as over-exploitation.

There are a number of other common knee injuries. Firstly, there is a knee sprain means you have a stretched or torn ligament. Then there are strains, which means you have torn a muscle or tendon.

tendonitis happens when a tendon is inflamed. Damage to the menisci is a really common sports injury, especially in activities in which one side to side movement or a sudden change in speed can cause them to tear.

And, of course, sometimes there can be cartilage injury in which a small piece of bone or cartilage breaks off, what long-term knee pain.

Osgood-Schlatter disease is especially common among young people aged 10-15, especially when linked to a growth spurt. A typical symptom is pain just below the front of the patella on the shin, which is even worse with activity. It is sometimes a bump under the knee that is painful to touch. Osgood-Schlatter disease is especially common in boys, the sport, the running, Join, or jump, all of a burden on the quadriceps muscles.

The arterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the most common knee ligament to be damaged in a sports injury, usually by a sudden turn or landing badly after a jump.

It is interesting that women athletes are eight times more likely to suffer damage to the cruciate ligament arterior than men.

Nobody is immune to knee injuries, with many professional footballers such as Ruud van Nistelrooy and Paul Gascoigne is known for her knee injury.

For many knee injuries, it is advised to rest the knee compression and apply. In these cases, a knee brace can help. In the worst cases, surgery may be necessary.

As knee injuries are so painful and so widespread, prevention is always better than cure. When playing sports, it is a good idea to wear protective equipment, such as Kneepad and shin guards. Knee support, including knee-belts and knee braces can also help prevent injuries and protect your knees if you have it previously injured.

It is also crucial to ensure that you always warm and cool and that your training is gradually increased so that you do not your knees under undue strain.

It is well worth a try weight lifting to strengthen your muscles, and yoga or stretching to improve flexibility, as this reduced the risk of sports injuries. And, of course, if your sport with jumping, make sure you bend your knees when you land.

Increasing awareness about knee injuries, knee support and Sports First Aid can help you stay fit, it is an important ingredient to a successful athlete.

Short-Term Happiness is No Substitute For Long-Term Health

Since the clocks back, we are all against head-on by the looming prospect of a long, dark winter. The changing of the seasons have a multitude of effects from person to person, while even the rich well of us feel discouraged by May the darkness that lies ahead. Winter holidays - "escapes to the sun" - are big business in the winter months, with many of us from behind our shores for warmer climes.

However, not all of us can do the same. Whether it is by high costs or work or family obligations, many of us stuck in the United Kingdom with the deteriorating weather. Back Serene, it is a temptation to allow pessimism to overcome us in such an environment, it is no wonder that we are looking for other simpler, cheaper to achieve such a feeling of lightness that brings a winter vacation.

One of the most popular methods is visiting tanning salons to use sun beds, sun what we appear on the outside. This pleasing aesthetic gives rise to feelings of power and wellbeing, but this is only a short-term solution.

continued use of sunbeds sustains the warm glow of tan, but the fact is that a trip to a tanning can expose an average person in the United Kingdom to more UV rays (the harmful rays emitted by the sun) when we will be in a year. The veneer of tan hides deeper damage, the skin appear older. The effects of age are hastened - blemished skin, wrinkly and hard - the result is that the fading of the tan exposes the skin damage that lies beneath.

Again, this is not the worst-case scenario for the connection between tanning beds and skin cancer are well documented. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United Kingdom, especially in England and Wales, where there are more than 60,000 new cases each year. 15% of these cases will be diagnosed as malignant melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer - a 100% increase since 1992.

The high levels of sun bed use in the United Kingdom can certainly attributed to a psychological feeling of sadness. The short-term relief from this that we can reach by Sun bed use is as artificial as the tan. Soon, this positive feeling and with reduced depressing weather worsening daily temptation at the top back to the tanning salon is almost impossible to resist. The solution, however, lies in people's minds.

This sadness is actually a decrease in the production of serotonin in the brain, the chemical that is responsible for regulating our moods. Therefore, what we require is not the appearance of time spent in the sun, but the active sense of it. This can be achieved through the use of devices such as the sunrise alarm clock, which emits light to aid the production of serotonin. These devices produce far less ultraviolet light than daylight, so even if they do not give you a tan they are much safer when it comes to dealing with the "winter blues". Because for a long-term happiness is most important is to protect our health.

Rosana Horowitz is an expert in SAD and is familiar with its effects. She has tested many products that lay claim to being the market leader but she has found the sunrise alarm clock to be highly effective in the treatment of SAD.
